Originally called the Titanic Enthusiasts of America, The Titanic Historical Society began first as a loose organization of people interested doing what they could to preserve the history of Titanic and the White Star Line. In common was a love of ships, their history, the lore of ships and a thirst to learn more. In the early research done by Walter Lord and separately by Ed Kamuda there was a wealth of information being gathered that showed there was much to learn about Titanic.

It was apparent that by studying other ships of the White Star Line much could be learned about Titanic and several myths were able to be put to rest.

Ed Kamuda began writing The Commutator as a regular journal for members. Its purpose was to keep everyone informed of the discoveries that were being made about Titanic and her sister ships.

A small book titled "The Sinking of the Titanic and Great Sea Disasters" was produced in 1912. With over 400,000 copies were sold door to door, it was responsible both for the huge popularity of Titanic and the incredible amount of myth, conjecture and faulty information about Titanic and the individuals involved. The source for most of the misinformation about Titanic was the Hearst papers.

The Titanic Commutator, from it's inception, provided new (to the public) information and discoveries about Titanic. Articles were carefully researched and accounts given by actual survivors were regularly published. The Titanic Historical Society (THS) has been in the forefront of efforts to eliminate the lies, myths and misinformation about Titanic. The Titanic Historical Society, Inc. is a non-profit, volunteer-supported organization. Its officers and members donate their talent and research in support of the Society to keep it as the primary source of accurate information about Titanic and the White Star Line. The Society is dedicated to preserving the history of Titanic, the accounts of survivors and the contributions of its members. Many myths and lies about Titanic, its crew and its survivors have been exposed and set straight in the pages of The Titanic Commutator.

These are not dry "historical" dissertations by scholars who are completely disconnected from their areas of study. These are living accounts or facts gained from the people who were actually there. Articles in The Commutator are always original, interesting and often entertaining. This is an ongoing and permanent record of THS, its discoveries and part of the active preservation of the historical record of Titanic and the White Star Line.

History is made by individuals. It is the composite of the actions of the people who took part in an event, the individual acts of bravery and the accounts of survivors. When Titanic survivor, Walter Belford died, he had no family survivors and his landlady threw all of his Titanic artifacts, letters, and documents into the garbage. A valuable piece of history was lost to a New York landfill. The loss of Walter Belford's piece of Titanic history made Edward Kamuda realize that if someone didn't do something fast, the history of Titanic would be lost forever. He became that someone and the result is The Titanic Historical Society, Inc. and the Titanic Museum.
